I thought the Yes! was a bit clumsy and clunky. The idea behind it is OK but it’s just the styling they haven’t got right
Value: Very overpriced

SCORE: 6/10
For me, this was the worst looking of the lot and I didn’t think there was enough feel. A very average putter
Value: Very poor value

SCORE: 5/10
The Yes! was too heavy for me and I didn’t like the looks. But I got some results that I would be happy with on the course
Value: Too expensive

SCORE: 6/10
This didn’t perform as well as some of the others, but the forgiveness was good and it gave a good roll. Didn’t like the looks
Value: Very expensive

SCORE: 5/10
The looks were a bit chunky and boxy for me, but the extra weight helped me to get through the ball a bit better
Value: A bit pricey

SCORE: 6/10

A surprising thumbs down for the Yes! putter on this occasion. Most of the panel couldn’t get past its looks. However, those who did found some good qualities

I liked the classic shape and alignment aid. It has a soft feel but I’m not really sure if the technology completely works
Value: Good value

SCORE: 7/10
The S-Blade was just average allround for me. It sat well and I felt comfortable with it, nothing special though
Value: OK value

SCORE: 6/10
I though the feel and quality of this putter were OK, the only thing I didn’t like was the blue colouring on the back
Value: About OK

SCORE: 6/10
I thought the S-Blade was eyecatching and the spherical face helped to counteract a pull I’ve got. I didn’t like the grip though
Value: About right

SCORE: 6/10
I liked the looks, but thought it was on the heavy side and had quite a hard feel. I couldn’t really get on with it
Value: A little expensive

SCORE: 5/10

As one of the newest manufacturers in this test, the SBlade provoked a mixed reaction from our readers. Only two, however, noticed an obvious benefit from its unique spherical face

This had a very, very soft feel which means you have to be positive with it. OK as far as mallets go.
Value: Very good value

SCORE: 7/10
I liked the different looks of the Benross and the feel. It seemed to be better on shorter putts than longer putts though.
Value: Great value

SCORE: 8/10
I didn’t think the feel of the Benross was as good as some of the others. Not a bad putter, but not my style
Value: Good value

SCORE: 5/10
It’s similar to the other mallets but the Benross does stand out and it worked for me. I liked the looks, feel and balance
Value: Excellent value

SCORE: 7/10
I thought the Benross was great on shortish putts and had a good alignment aid. It had a soft feel and I liked the looks
Value: Really good value

SCORE: 7/10

The biggest attraction of the Benross was obviously the price. However, there were plenty of other good qualities that impressed our panel, including its looks and feel

The Ping felt very heavy in comparison, but I like that. It had a good solid feel, is well balanced and looks great in the black finish
Value: A bit pricey

SCORE: 8/10
I felt the Ping was a very well made club but the looks didn’t do anything for me. It had a nice feel and was well balanced
Value: Too expensive

SCORE: 7/10
Visually this is very similar to mine and I like the classic look. I thought it was well balanced and came off the face well
Value: Not bad value

SCORE: 8/10
I thought the Ping was a little heavy at first and didn’t have as soft a feel. But I like the way it’s been put together
Value: Not great for me

SCORE: 7/10
I like the retro looks, the shaft, grip and the overall performance. I found it was particularity good on medium to long putts
Value: Too expensive

SCORE: 6/10

A good solid performance from one of the most classic-looking putters on test. Most of our panel picked up on it being well balanced despite it also being one of the heaviest

It has all the tricks and technology and I like the soft feel. I also got plenty of extra roll thanks to the grooves in the face
Value: Well priced

SCORE: 7/10
I liked the quirky looks of the Rife and the two weights that were well positioned and helped with off-centre hits. Also lots of feel
Value: Very reasonable

SCORE: 8/10
I don’t normally go for mallets but I thought it was easy to take back and the face always squared up well. Good on long putts
Value: Very good value

SCORE: 7/10
The Rife had a very soft feel and rolled the ball well. I thought it was very well balanced and forgiving with interesting looks
Value: Average

SCORE: 6/10
Not the best-looking putter from above, but I liked the feel, it rolled the ball well and the size of the head boosts confidence
Value: Good value

SCORE: 8/10

Our panel put this on a par with the Ping, but none of our readers had a bad word to say on the Rife. All loved the combination of great feel and roll as well as an attractive price tag

It’s a bit odd looking but it’s nicely balanced, has a good feel and again rolls the ball really well. A good quality putter.
Value: OK value

SCORE: 7/10
This was my favourite because it had a slightly softer feel and performed well on medium to fast greens. I also like the looks
Value: Excellent value

SCORE: 9/10
This was the lightest putter of the lot which suited me. I liked everything about it and the fact that it is also a training aid
Value: Great value

SCORE: 8/10
I thought the Zen stood out from the crowd both in terms of its looks and performance. Great feel, forgiveness and roll
Value: Excellent value

SCORE: 8/10
The Zen certainly looks different, but I liked it. The contact and feel was great and it was easy to line up
Value: Would pay that

SCORE: 8/10

Zen have produce a great all-round package in the Oracle Tour that completely won our panel over. Its combination of striking looks and tour feel helped it to top our reader poll

NCG Verdict

ZEN ORACLE TOUR
AS possibly the most visually distinctive putter on test, it’s a little surprising that Zen have topped our reader poll. However, the things our readers loved most about this high-tech club were the feel, balance and weight.
Perimeter weighting has been used to boost the MOI factor and help with forgiveness on off-centre hits and twisting of the clubhead at impact. And Zen say their ‘outstanding’ feel is created by a Zen Extra Sensory Polymer ESP thru-core insert that is poured as a liquid into the hollow steel shell then cured and milled. So, as you can see, this flat stick is anything but ordinary. However, the other clever thing about this Zen putter is that it can also be used as a training aid.

RIFE TWO-BAR HYBRID
IF you’re predominately a mallet player then this putter should be right up your street. It has interchangeable weights, bags of feel and great looks to boot.

PING REDWOOD ZB
THE traditionalist will be attracted to the ZB not only for its looks, but also its nononsense, uncomplicated approach to putting. Just line it up and watch it roll.

BENROSS INNOVATOR
EVEN though this putter had the smallest price tag of them all, you’ll certainly get full value for money from a putter that has given the big boys a run for their money.

S-BLADE EMPEROR
THIS unique spherical blade is designed to improve roll and counteract last minute twisting of the clubhead. A great idea.

PRO’S VERDICT
Worksop pro Kev Crossland gives his expert opinion
Best for high handicappers – I think the Benross is a great putter not only to get started with but also for players who are at the higher end of this scale. Its soft feel means you have to be positive with your putts which is important. It’s also a great price.

Best for mid-handicappers – I think the Rife is perfect for this category because it has all the alignment aids and technology that a decent player will understand and get the most out of. The other benefit is it can also help them to improve their putting.

Best for low handicappers – Without a doubt, the Ping Redwood ZB’s classic shape will suit the eye of better players with its clean looks, nice weight and balance. I think the tradition and reputation is also something that would appeal.
